Barrier Islands
Long ridges of sand or other sediment, deposited or shaped by the longshore current, that are separated form the mainland are called barrier islands. Barrier islands can be several kilometers wide and tens of kilometers long.
This is a picture of the long string of narrow barrier islands off the coast of North Carolina and a small portion of Virginia called the Outer Banks.
