Deflation
The lowering of the land surface that results from the wind's removal of surface particles is called deflation. Areas with sandy soil are more than likely to have deflation blowouts. Deflation is a major problem in many agricultural area of the world as well as deserts, where wind has been consistently strong for thousands of years. In areas of intense wind erosion, coarse gravel and pebbles are usually left behind as the finer surface material is removed by winds. The coarse surface left behind is called desert pavement.
The Richat Structure, also known as the Eye of the Sahara,is located in the Sahara Desert. This structure has been deeply eroded by the wind, taking away the sedimentary rock that has been exposed in the dome. When looking at the different ridges of the structure it shows that this is extremely old between 94 and 104 millions or more.
